surfing

Leo Carrillo State Beach (known as Secos to surfers) is just a short half mile south of the Ventura/LA County Line. The beach area is about 1.5 miles of sand and rock that offers tide pools and caves just made for exploring. The water is a favorite of surfers, scuba divers, windsurfers and surf fishermen alike. Most people come here for the surfing and the nicely shaped waves that peel off of this point break. A big rock formation (Secos rock) catches and then helps to form the incoming waves into a busy inside section. During bigger swells the offshore reefs help to expand the action up and down the beach. There's waves for both short and long board riders, depending on conditions. Afternoon winds bring the windsurfers to this already petite take off zone that can get pretty crowded. For the most part this is a rock bottom surfing beach and is not recommended for the novice surfer. Many surfing contests are held at Leo Carrillo State Beach (Secos) each year. This is one of Southern California's most popular right point break surfing beaches. A mile south of Leo Carrillo State Beach summertime surfers can usually find a nice left break. This surf area breaks best on a South/SW swell during May and through October. Late September and early October are considered to be the peak months. The best surfing is experienced at medium to high tide.
